About Me

Randy Boss, CRA, CRM, SHRM-SCP
Partner / Ottawa Kent

Randy sees the traditional insurance industry approach as too focused on selling insurance policies and not managing risk holistically as an enterprise. This lack of integration has created a “silo effect” between property/casualty and benefits in insurance companies, agencies and in businesses where someone in finance manages the property/casualty end, while human resources manage benefits. He is very passionate about a holistic risk management approach to “break down silos” and get management teams to work together to protect company assets and achieve a healthier, safer, and more productive workforce.

As the co-founder of Well Safe Coaches, a wellness provider that has completed over 10,000 health risk assessments at 90% participation without incentives, Randy has helped motivate employees to improve their health risk profile to lower health care costs to them and their employer. He is also founder of Employers for Better Health & Safety, a non-profit source for worksite health, safety and wellness programs. Randy is a lead instructor for the Institute of Benefit & Wellness Advisors, where he trains insurance agents on how to present risk management as a benefit. He is the Director of Benefits Risk Management for the Beyond Insurance Global Network and the co-founder of OSHAlogs.com, an OSHA compliance and injury management platform.

Randy started in the insurance industry in 1978 and has been at Ottawa Kent since 1982, helping grow the business from five people in one office to over 50 in four locations. As a partner at Ottawa Kent, he is responsible for sales management, agent training, agency seminars and managing his own accounts. The agency has been a member of the Beyond Insurance Global Network since 2009 and was featured in the July 2012 issue of Rough Notes magazine for their “no silo” holistic approach to insurance and risk management.
Randy is also very active in several organizations. He is on the board and chairman of the safety committee at Associated Builders and Contractors of West Michigan, member of the National Association of Health Underwriters Cost Containment Working Group, past President of the Association of Human Resource Management and a board member of West Michigan Works a seven county workforce development agency. He is a member of Editorial Advisory Board at Rough Notes magazine and a regular contributor of risk management articles for Rough Notes and numerous other publications. He is the author of a children’s book that helps parents, grandparents and educators teach children to make healthy choices, and he makes regular visits to elementary schools to inspire children to become passionate about reading and writing.
